A Guide to Jamaica by Global Holidays

Unlike some of its Caribbean neighbours, Jamaica's size, geography, history and vibrant culture ensures it can offer plenty of contrasts for the holidaymaker.

The islands many attractions range from the stunning scenery of the Blue Mountains to the country's vibrant reggae music heritage; from its idyllic beaches to soft adventure activities such as river rafting.

Hiking, bird watching, horticulture and scuba diving are just a few of the other activities the tourist board is pushing.

Most visitors to Jamaica land at the international airport at Montego Bay and head for the lively north coast resort areas around Negril, Montego Bay, Runaway Bay, Falmouth and Ocho Rios. Sidestep the hustlers and tacky souvenir shops north of Montego town centre and concentrate on the historic landmarks such as The Cage, a stone structure that once housed runaway slaves, and 16th century Fort Montego.

Montego Bay boasts a vibrant music scene and good night life, as well as the biggest choice of places to eat and shop on the north coast. There are plenty of good beaches in the area and four well kept public beaches with showers bars and beach front restaurants. A small charge is made to enter.

Further along the coast, Ocho Rios is now Jamaica's second largest tourist resort, as well as a popular stop for cruise ships. It is also home to the popular Dunn's River Falls, one of the most photographed places in the world!

Jamaica is home to the property that claims to have invented the all-inclusive concept - Couples in Ocho Rios. Hedonism III, aimed at singles and couples opened in autumn 1999 and features Jamaica's first swim up rooms.

The best time to visit Jamaica is from December to April, but you can visit Jamaica at any time of year and be assured of a friendly welcome and a quality holiday. There are some excellent hotels on the island of Jamaica, most offering all-Inclusive accommodation.
